MSNBC’s Nicolle Wallace said Monday on her podcast that seeing “For Due Process” protest signs made her “democracy-worried heart sing.”
Wallace on Wednesday announced the launch of her new podcast, “The Best People with Nicolle Wallace,” expanding from her weekly political show on the network. While speaking with fellow MSNBC host Rachel Maddow about the Trump administration’s deportation efforts, Wallace criticized the push for mass deportations, claiming the efforts haven’t focused on illegal criminal migrants.
“Well, I also think if you go to the most fundamental thing that they’re doing — they’re moving human beings,” Wallace said. “I think if you pump the brakes right there — what the public thinks it’s for is deporting back to home countries people who are adjudicated criminals. New York Times/Siena’s got like 87% of people that are for that. That’s largely what Obama did. That is not where any of the time and energy has been spent.”
“So all of the movement of human beings to countries from which they are not, for crimes that they can’t prove were committed. For people that it’s not even clear they presented evidence to anyone,” Wallace added. “I just find it all so surreal. I find the fact everyone seems — it doesn’t feel like a partisan statement to say ‘Due process is a thing we’re still for.’”
Since President Donald Trump vowed during his campaign to deport the millions of illegal migrants who entered the U.S. under the Biden-Harris administration, Democrats have pushed back. Beginning in April, Democrat pundits and lawmakers spoke out against the deportation of illegal migrant Kilmar Armando Abrego Garcia after he was deported by the Trump administration in March.
Pundits like Democrat strategist and Fox News co-host Jessica Tarlov called out the Trump administration’s lack of “due process,” with fellow Democrats echoing similar concerns.
Wallace went on to tell Maddow that she had driven by some of the protests and felt comforted by the signs, adding that the U.S. shouldn’t be moving “humans anywhere.”
“I, like you, have driven by some of the protests on some of the big weekend protest days and to see people holding up the signs for due process like, made my, you know, democracy-worried heart sing,” Wallace said.
“But the other piece of it is the movement of humans. Like, I’m not sure that we should be moving humans anywhere. I’m not sure that any part of our politics ever contemplated anything other than deporting adjudicated criminals back to their home countries,” Wallace said.
In addition to vocal criticism of the Trump administration over Abrego Garcia, Democrats like Maryland Sen. Chris Van Hollen took taxpayer-funded trips to El Salvador to meet with the illegal migrant. Despite the Department of Homeland Security releasing files linking Abrego Garcia to alleged past connections with the MS-13 gang, Democrats have continued to defend him.
In May, Democrat New Jersey Rep. LaMonica McIver was charged by federal prosecutors for assaulting law enforcement officers during a political stunt at an Immigration and Customs Enforcement facility, alongside two other Democrat representatives and a Democrat mayor who were also taken into custody.
